How the 2020 elections are playing out in 2019 is a question many voters are wondering.
With Democrats having held their first four consecutive governorships since the 1970s, and Republicans holding their first governorships in the last 20 years, a new book, How the 2019 Elections Are Playing Out in 2019: The Politics of Change, examines how the 2018 midterm elections will shape up.
The book, co-authored by Harvard professor Dan Balz, focuses on the dynamics of a new era, as the parties grapple with how to govern in a new world.
A political scientist by training, Balz said that his research will shed light on how these political cycles affect voters, and will also offer a broader look at the dynamics and motivations of politicians.
“I am looking at what’s driving political parties, who’s influencing them, and what they’re doing,” Balz told Fortune.
“What’s going on in the campaigns and what are the dynamics that drive it?”
In this new book — which is expected to be released in 2019 — Balz will explain the dynamics behind the 2018 and 2020 elections, as well as how candidates are running campaigns.
This time around, he will focus on the 2016 elections, which saw President Donald Trump win by more than 20 points, with the election being seen as the biggest in U.S. history.
Balz’s book, titled How the Elections Are Changing: The New Politics of Democracy, will cover the political parties in a series of articles.
In addition to a look at 2020, which is shaping up to be a very big year for political parties.
The 2020 elections will determine the shape of American politics for the next four years, Balaz said.
And with Trump’s presidency on the verge of being declared a national emergency, there are many questions about how these new parties are going to govern.
“You have to start thinking about what’s happening in the presidential race and what’s going to happen in the state and local races,” he said.
Balaz, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and former chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence, has been studying the 2016 presidential election for years.
He said that the focus on how the midterm elections are affecting the country and what it’s like to be in charge of a government is an interesting topic.
“The next four to eight years are going as political times,” he told Fortune, “and we’re going to see a lot of people have to deal with what’s happened, and the challenges that that’s going be, because the parties have to be able to govern.”
The book’s title, How The Elections Are Looking, is based on an analysis of political data compiled by The Washington Post and The Huffington Post.
The data, which was first published in 2016, looks at how the campaigns of candidates and party leaders are using Facebook and other social media platforms, and how people across the country are reacting to their campaigns.
The findings suggest that the 2018 midterms were a turning point in how American politics are being organized, Balzac said.
He believes that a new approach will be needed to govern as a nation in a post-Trump era.
“We’re in a world where the parties are getting together, they’re getting elected, and they’re having to decide what to do,” Balzac told Fortune in a phone interview.
“That’s the first time in the post-World War II era that you have this kind of unprecedented level of coordination and collaboration that’s taking place between parties, and this is something that we’ve never seen before.”
In the book, Balzo describes the new dynamics of political parties as they attempt to govern the country.
“There are a lot more people in politics right now than ever before, and a lot is riding on the outcome of the 2020 presidential election,” he says in the book.
“How does this play out?
How does that translate into the legislative races?
How do those dynamics affect the dynamics within the political party?”
The book will also examine how the 2020 election will affect the makeup of the next Congress, and whether a new president can be elected in 2020.
“If you’re the party that’s in charge and you win the presidency, then you can take care of yourself,” Balaz says.
“But if the party doesn’t get elected, the parties will have to look to a new leadership to govern, and that leadership will have a much different focus.”
